Since its <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tools.ietf.org\/id\/draft-blank-ietf-bimi-00.txt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">first formalized spec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2019, BIMI has come a long way with big names like Google, Verizon Media (which owns Yahoo Mail) behind this emerging email standard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With its growing adoption, now\u2019s the time to look into how to set up BIMI for your domain. And, just like those others, BIMI is essentially a text record that lives on your servers. Email clients that support BIMI will check for that record to confirm that your emails are legit (like for an <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/email-deliverability-audit\" target=\"_blank\">email deliverability audit<\/a>)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The feature that distinguishes BIMI? During the verification process, email clients will pull in your brand logo to display alongside your message. So, not only does BIMI authenticate you behind the scenes, it puts your brand front and center in subscribers\u2019 inboxes, creating a better, more memorable experience in the process.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And since email subscribers deliver an average of <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/resources\/2020-state-of-email-report-fall-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">$36 return for every $1 invested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2014giving an experience to remember is worth your effort!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How to set up BIMI<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When BIMI was first introduced, the setup process was fairly involved, requiring approval to participate in the pilot program run by the AuthIndicators Working Group ( guides the development of BIMI). Over the years, the setup process has been simplified. In fact, you might\u2019ve completed half the setup unknowingly if you\u2019re using authentication protocols like DMARC already.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For those just getting started\u2014or anyone who wants a refresher\u2014here\u2019s a step-by-step guide to getting BIMI set up for your domain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">1. Authenticate your organization\u2019s emails with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BIMI isn\u2019t a one-stop solution for sender verification. It works in tandem with existing authentication protocols to tell recipients that you are, in fact, who you say you are. So, you\u2019ll need to make sure that your sending domain has SPF, DKIM, and DMARC (three standards in the email industry) properly implemented.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specifically, you\u2019ll want to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ensure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are all aligned. It\u2019s the first (and most important) step toward using BIMI to display your logo.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You will need to set up the DMARC record on the \u201cFrom\u201d domain. When setting up the DMARC record, the reject policy in that record must either be p=quarantine or p=reject.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Note: BIMI requires DMARC, and DMARC requires your domain to have DKIM records set up in order to work. Produce an SVG Tiny PS version of your logo<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The major benefit of BIMI is the inclusion of your brand logo in inboxes that support the protocol. To include your logo, BIMI requires you to supply it in a specific, secure vector format, in the correct size and shape. You\u2019ll need to link out to a scalable vector graphics (SVG) version of your logo in your BIMI record.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SVG is a file format that ensures your graphic is crisp and clear, even when scaled across different devices. While not the best for complex graphics, SVG is the perfect solution for logos and icons.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The general rules of thumb are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Square aspect ratio<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Solid background color<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Center your image (it may appear in a rounded frame)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Keep it under 32 kilobytes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You can check out the <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bimigroup.org\/creating-bimi-svg-logo-files\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">full specifications here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. (Anything temporary or private will mean your subscribers won\u2019t be able to see your logo next to your email in the inbox, defeating the purpose of BIMI.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">3. Acquire a VMC for your logo (optional)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This step is optional but recommended. Publish a BIMI record for your domain in DNS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once DMARC is properly set up and your logo file is hosted on a publicly accessible server, create a text record on your domain\u2019s nameservers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While that can happen in a lot of different ways depending on your DNS provider (and may require the help of your engineering or ops team), the text record itself is very straightforward.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You\u2019ll need to access your DNS and create a new TXT record at the <\/span><b>default._bimi<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> subdomain, and add the following values as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><code>default._bimi.<strong>[domain]<\/strong> IN TXT \u201cv=BIMI1; l=<strong>[SVG URL]<\/strong>; a=<strong>[PEM URL]<\/strong>;\"<\/code><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are the parts you need to fill in:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Domain<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is your domain name (i.e., litmus.com).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>SVG URL<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is the address where your logo file is hosted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>PEM URL<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">optional<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> field for pointing to where your (also optional) Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) is hosted.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For most DNS providers, you enter your BIMI record in two parts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The first is:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><code>default._bimi.example.com<\/code><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The second field is the actual record text:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><code>v=BIMI1; l=https:\/\/example.com\/bimi-logo.svg<\/code><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Litmus BIMI record looks like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><code>v=BIMI1; l=https:\/\/campaigns.litmus.com\/_email\/logos\/litmus-icon.svg<\/code><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s also a <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bimigroup.org\/bimi-generator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BIMI record generator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> that spits out all of this information for you. Just give it your domain, SVG image, and optional VMC file.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">5. Use the BIMI Inspector tool to ensure proper set up<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Once all of that is configured and added to your DNS, you might wonder: Did I set up BIMI correctly?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Give it a little bit of time (usually around 24 hours) to make its way around the world and various data centers. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then, use the AuthIndicator Group\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bimigroup.org\/bimi-generator\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BIMI Inspector<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to check your domain name and see if BIMI is properly configured.
