GMX is owned by Global Mail Exchange, a subsidiary of United Internet AG, and has more than 19 million users. It offers a free webmail client,\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gmx.net\/produkte\/mail\/freemail\/\">GMX Freemail<\/a>, which, much like AOL Mail and Gmail, is advertising-supported. It also offers paid options\u2014<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gmx.net\/produkte\/mail\/topmail\/\">TopMail<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gmx.net\/produkte\/mail\/promail\/\">ProMail<\/a>\u2014which offer additional storage and email addresses for members residing in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>WEB.DE, founded in 1995, is another email client provided by United Internet. It has 15 million users, and also offers a free, advertising-supported webmail client, WEB.DE Freemail. It also offers professional, fee-based solutions for those with larger email needs.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/united-internet-media.de\/de\/produkte-und-loesungen\/dialog\/trusted-services\/trusteddialog\/\">54%<\/a>\u00a0of emails in Germany are opened in GMX or WEB.DE. If you\u2019re based in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland (or one of your offices is), or you\u2019re emailing subscribers based in those countries, then you should be aware of how your emails display in these clients\u2014and if they\u2019ll even reach the inbox.<\/p>\n<h2>A LOOK AT THE CLIENTS + THEIR TOOLS<\/h2>\n<h3>MOBILE APPS + FLEXIBLE ACCESS<\/h3>\n<p>Both GMX and WEB.DE make it easy to access email anywhere, on any device. Users can check email via the webmail client and POP3\/IMAP. In addition, both clients offer iOS, Android, and Windows Phone apps.<\/p>\n<h3>MANY EMAIL ADDRESSES, ONE APP<\/h3>\n<p>GMX Freemail users are granted two email addresses with the domain of @gmx.de (Germany), @gmx.at (Austria), @gmx.ch (Switzerland), or @gmx.net. Both email addresses can be hooked up within one interface, so users can access all of their mail\u2014personal and business\u2014within one app.<\/p>\n<p>For those with paying GMX ProMail and TopMail accounts, they are granted more email addresses, as well as a wider array of domains to choose from.<\/p>\n<p>WEB.DE users are granted one email address with the @web.de domain. There are\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/produkte.web.de\/club\/#.freemail.acc_1.club\">premium services<\/a>\u00a0for users that need more addresses.<\/p>\n<h3>EMAIL ACTIONS IN THE BROWSER<\/h3>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gmx.net\/produkte\/browser\/mailcheck\/#.produkte.int.uebersicht.hero\">GMX<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/produkte.web.de\/mailcheck\/#.produkte.int.uebersicht.navi\">WEB.DE<\/a>\u00a0both offer MailCheck services for no additional cost. MailCheck is a browser add-on that allows users to see the number of unread messages in their inbox. It also gives users the ability to take action directly from within their browser\u2014they can write emails, refresh their inbox, view their media center, and check their calendar. MailCheck also allows for desktop notifications.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11556 media-11556\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/gmx-mailcheck.png\" alt=\"gmx-mailcheck\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>In addition, when MailCheck is set up, the mail storage capacity in both GMX and WEB.DE Freemail increase.<\/p>\n<h2>YOUR EMAIL IN GMX + WEB.DE<\/h2>\n<p>Now let\u2019s get to the good stuff\u2014how do your emails display in these clients?<\/p>\n<h3>THE INBOX VIEW<\/h3>\n<h4>GMX<\/h4>\n<p>GMX automatically sorts emails into five categories: Favorites, Inbox, Read, Spam, Sent, and Draft. When a user logs in, they are automatically taken to the Inbox folder.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11558 media-11558\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/gmx-inbox-folder.png\" alt=\"gmx-inbox-folder\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>The Inbox folder includes all emails that pass through the GMX spam filter, as well as advertisements. Advertisements are greyed out, and display a logo next to their sender name. Advertisements can be removed from the inbox by clicking on the \u201cX\u201d icon next to the sender name (see \u201cKeuchenportal.de\u201d example above).<\/p>\n<p>If a user clicks on an advertisement, there is a disclaimer at the bottom of the email:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11559 media-11559\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/gmx-disclaimer.png\" alt=\"gmx-disclaimer\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>This disclaimer clarifies that this is an advertisement, and that user data will not be passed on to the advertiser.<\/p>\n<p>In addition:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Symbols in the subject line are supported<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/litmus.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-preview-text-support?utm_campaign=product_gmxweb&amp;utm_source=litmusblog&amp;utm_medium=blog\">Preview text<\/a>\u00a0is not displayed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Since preview text isn\u2019t supported, the sender name and subject line will be crucial for encouraging subscribers to open. Use a recognizable, trustworthy from name, and an optimized subject line.<\/p>\n<h4>WEB.DE<\/h4>\n<p>WEB.DE sorts emails into eight categories: Unread, Favorites, Friends &amp; Acquaintances, Unknown, Trash, Spam, Sent, and Drafts. When a user logs in, they are automatically placed in their Friends &amp; Acquaintances folder.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11560 media-11560\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-friends-acq.png\" alt=\"web-friends-acq\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Emails in this folder include emails from WEB.DE, as well as those in the user\u2019s address book, and senders they frequently interact with.<\/p>\n<p>Like GMX, WEB.DE also supports symbols in the inbox.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11561 media-11561\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/webde-symbols.png\" alt=\"webde-symbols\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>WEB.DE has advertisements in the inbox, but rather than showing the advertiser\u2019s icon, they use their own logo to distinguish ads from other messages in the inbox.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11562 media-11562\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-ads.png\" alt=\"web-ads\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>In the example above, the advertisement is for Skoda, a car manufacturer. The subject line translates to \u201cWEB.DE presents Skoda.\u201d Similar to GMX, there is a disclaimer at the bottom of each advertisement.<\/p>\n<h3>HOW DO GMX AND WEB.DE DISPLAY YOUR EMAILS?<\/h3>\n<p>Similar to AOL Mail, GMX and WEB.DE show emails in an iframe, rather than embedding them. This maintains your email\u2019s original code, rather than reformatting it inline\u2014and it leads to great rendering capabilities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11563 media-11563\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/gmx-email.png\" alt=\"gmx-email\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Email in GMX<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11564 media-11564\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/web-email.png\" alt=\"web-email\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Email in WEB.DE<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>IMAGES AUTOMATICALLY ON<\/h4>\n<p>Both GMX and WEB.DE display images by default in the inbox. However, optimizing for\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/litmus.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-email-image-blocking?utm_campaign=product_gmxweb&amp;utm_source=litmusblog&amp;utm_medium=blog\">image blocking<\/a>\u00a0for other email clients is always a great idea. Try using HTML text, ALT text, and <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/a-guide-to-bulletproof-buttons-in-email-design\/\">bulletproof buttons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, all messages in the Spam folder have images disabled. And, when this is the case, images are collapsed and ALT text is not supported.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11565 media-11565\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/images-on.png\" alt=\"images-on\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Images enabled in GMX<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11566 media-11566\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/images-off.png\" alt=\"images-off\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Images blocked in GMX<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>SUPPORT FOR ANIMATED GIFS<\/h4>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/litmus.com\/blog\/a-guide-to-animated-gifs-in-email?utm_campaign=product_gmxweb&amp;utm_source=litmusblog&amp;utm_medium=blog\">Animated GIFs<\/a>\u00a0are a great way to add interactive visuals to your designs. Luckily, both GMX and WEB.DE support animated GIFs, so feel free to get creative.<\/p>\n<p>However, not all email clients support animated GIFs. Instead, they will show the first frame of the animation. To overcome this, ensure vital information\u2014perhaps a call-to-action, offer, or headline\u2014is included in the first frame of your GIF.<\/p>\n<h4>LACK OF ADVANCED HTML AND CSS SUPPORT<\/h4>\n<p>While GMX and WEB.DE have great support for HTML and CSS basics, they lack support for advanced techniques. This isn\u2019t unexpected\u2014most webmail clients have similar shortcomings.<\/p>\n<p>For example, neither GMX nor WEB.DE support HTML5 video. If you\u2019re using these types of advanced techniques, be sure to have proper fallbacks in place.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, we noticed during testing that neither client supports border-radius. This attribute is often used to add rounded corners to call-to-action (CTA) buttons, like the one below:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11567 media-11567\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/border-radius.png\" alt=\"border-radius\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>GMX and WEB.DE do not support border radius<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a subtle change compared to email clients where where border-radius is supported:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11568 media-11568\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/border-radius-gmail.png\" alt=\"border-radius gmail\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Gmail supports border-radius<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lack of support for border-radius won\u2019t affect the functionality of your CTAs.<\/p>\n<h2>SPAM FILTERS, SECURITY &amp; DELIVERABILITY<\/h2>\n<p>Germany is known for its\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.oracle.com\/marketingcloud\/email-marketing-clarifying-german-opt-requirements\">strict spam laws<\/a>, and GMX and WEB.DE pride themselves on their high security and privacy standards. Both have a multi-level spam filter, which detects unsolicited emails and moves them to the Spam folder.<\/p>\n<p>The spam filters\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/help.gmx.com\/en\/email\/spam-protection.html\">perform tasks like<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Distinguishing reputable emails from unsolicited bulk emails based on checksum methods.<\/li>\n<li>Analyzing emails for technical properties and errors that are typical of spam.<\/li>\n<li>Checking emails for fake sender addresses (i.e. ensuring the email was sent from the server responsible for the domain).<\/li>\n<li>Comparing emails with internal and external lists (i.e. IP addresses of servers known for sending spam or URLs that occur in known spam e-mails).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, there is also a personal spam filter in these clients. When a user personally marks an email as \u201cSpam\u201d or \u201cNot Spam,\u201d future emails from those senders will be classified in the correct folder.<\/p>\n<h3>\u201cEMAIL MADE IN GERMANY\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>In an effort to promote German email providers as the most secure in the world, four of United Internet\u2019s brands\u2014GMX, WEB.DE, Telekom, and freenet\u2014joined together to implement new security standards.<\/p>\n<p>The result of this initiative\u2014\u201c<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.e-mail-made-in-germany.de\/\">Email Made in Germany<\/a>\u201d\u2014was launched in August 2013. The program ensures that email traveling between its email servers never leave local servers, which are all based in Germany. Email Made in Germany guarantees that all emails are transmitted with SSL encryption and protected against access from third parties.<\/p>\n<p>Secure senders are marked with an \u201cEmail Made in Germany\u201d seal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11587 media-11587\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/email-made-in-germany.png\" alt=\"email made in germany\" \/><\/figure>\n<p><em>Source:\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.e-mail-made-in-germany.de\/Kennzeichnung.html\">Email Made in Germany<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that this program is only effective for emails being transferred between GMX, WEB.DE, Telekom, and freenet. If a user from within the network emails a user with a Gmail account, that email will not be encrypted. Users will be notified if they are emailing to an address that does not fall under the program\u2019s protection.<\/p>\n<h3>TRUSTED DIALOG<\/h3>\n<p>Founded in 2009 by email clients like WEB.DE, GMX, 1 &amp; 1, freenet, and T-Online,\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/united-internet-media.de\/en\/products-and-solutions\/dialog\/trusted-services\/trusteddialog\/\">Trusted Dialog<\/a>\u00a0is an initiative that aims to protect their users from spam.<\/p>\n<p>Trusted Dialog verifies the authenticity of the sender\u2019s emails through DKIM, ensuring that the sender is who they say they are. After proof of authenticity has been provided, the sender gets the Trusted Dialog seal and their logo displayed in the inbox.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-11575 media-11575\" class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/trusteddialog-logo1.png\" alt=\"trusteddialog-logo\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Thanks to the seal and logo, users can easily identify trustworthy emails in their inboxes. Many Trusted Dialog brands have seen an\u00a0<a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.united-internet-media.de\/de\/best-cases\/dialog\/\">increase in opens and clicks<\/a>\u00a0as a result of the increased trust with their subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>Other benefits of being a Trusted Dialog brand include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Direct delivery to the inbox\u2014not the spam folder. In GMX, emails are delivered straight to the inbox, whereas in WEB.DE messages are delivered to the Friends &amp; Acquaintances folder.<\/li>\n<li>Video content will play within the inbox.
