While a lot of brands opt for all-image emails, we prefer using as much text as possible\u2014styled with CSS to keep it on brand\u2014so that people using assistive technology like screen readers have actual content to consume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our retro Litmus Weekly is no different. While it\u2019s heavily styled, all of that happens with CSS instead of Photoshop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/7-simple-tricks-to-make-your-email-code-more-accessible\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dig into the code<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you\u2019ll see a bunch of HTML, CSS, and semantic markup that provides not only human- and machine-readable content, but context for what that content actually means. You\u2019ll also see a whole bunch of HTML tables, too, which can be confusing for people using screen readers. Knowing this, we apply <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.a11yproject.com\/posts\/2014-05-15-getting-started-aria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an ARIA role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to every table element to prevent it from being read as a table.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><code><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;table role=\u201dpresentation\u201d&gt;&lt;\/table&gt;<\/span><\/code><\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/wai-aria\/#presentation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The presentation role<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does exactly what it sounds like: it tells any assistive technology that the element is used for presentation only, so don\u2019t bother doing anything with it. It\u2019s what prevents screen readers from reading out every individual table row and cell to users, which is a very jarring experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of hiding things from screen readers, we use a similar ARIA feature for those 90s-inspired bullets, too. Instead of using an ARIA role, though, we include the \u201caria-hidden\u201d attribute on the button images:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><code><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;img src=\"https:\/\/campaigns.litmus.com\/_email\/2021\/April\/04012021_Litmus_Weekly_retro\/bullet-red.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"15\" height=\"15\" aria-hidden=\"true\" \/&gt;<\/span><\/code><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the bullets are purely decorative, we\u2019re removing them in line with <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.digitala11y.com\/aria-hidden-state\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ARIA spec<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which aims to improve the experience for assistive technology users by eliminating redundant or extraneous content.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of email accessibility<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One in four adults in the <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/disability-and-health\/articles-documents\/disability-impacts-all-of-us-infographic.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (U.S.) and <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/infographics\/disability-eu-facts-figures\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Union<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have a disability, and globally, it&#8217;s <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/disability-and-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in six<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, the \u201cdialing progress\u201d GIF describes what that image is: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Dialing progress\u2019 with an image of a computer connecting to a rotating globe with animated dots.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-113193 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Accessible-Gif.gif\" alt=\"an animated GIF of a vintage computer, with an ellipses and a globe spinning. The alt text reads \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">composite of headshots from the 90s of the Litmus marketing department.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alt text is one of the best ways to increase the accessibility of your emails, both for sighted and non-sighted users. Even if someone can see those images, <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-email-image-blocking\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there\u2019s no guarantee that they\u2019ll be displayed in the inbox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Alt text helps your message get through no matter what.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step 3: Make progressive enhancements when possible<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Progressive enhancement means designing for the basics first\u2014ensuring emails function well on older clients, desktops, and browsers\u2014then adding features for enhanced experiences where supported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A great example in this Litmus Weekly\u2014and one of my favorite tricks in this issue\u2014is the use of one of the greatest HTML tags of all time: marquee!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You probably noticed the scrolling date underneath the animated Litmus Weekly logo. While a lot of folks thought it was just another GIF, it\u2019s actually live animated text.<\/span><\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Recording-2021-04-02-at-10.33.28-AM.gif\" alt=\"The hero banner of Litmus Weekly, featuring the Litmus logo, 'Weekly' animated as a rainbow pop out, and '1 April 1997' as a marquee effect.\" width=\"752\" height=\"305\" \/>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nFirst introduced in older versions of Microsoft\u2019s Internet Explorer, marquee allows you to scroll and move text around your document. It\u2019s old, <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/developer.mozilla.org\/en-US\/docs\/Web\/HTML\/Element\/marquee\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it\u2019s deprecated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it sure is beautiful. And, since it\u2019s animating the live text included in the HTML, it\u2019s inherently accessible to assistive technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, the movement could be distracting to some users, so use elements like marquee (or any other animation) cautiously.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accessibility doesn\u2019t have to be boring<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We had so much fun creating our retro Litmus Weekly. More importantly, we\u2019re thrilled that we didn\u2019t have to sacrifice <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/email-accessibility-for-designers-8-best-practices-you-should-follow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">email accessibility for design<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, even when bringing back ridiculous design trends from decades past.
