There are a number of faux video techniques out there to simulate an <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/video-in-email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">embed video in email<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this post, we&#8217;ll walk you through the technique we use here at Litmus. It\u2019s built on <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/a-guide-to-animated-gifs-in-email\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">animated GIFs<\/a> and has one big advantage: It also works in Gmail!<\/span><\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/fauxvideo.gif\" alt=\"Faux Video Example\" width=\"634\" height=\"418\" \/>\n<h2>Why use faux video?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/video-in-email\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video in email<\/a> is a popular topic, it only works in Apple Mail and iOS Mail\u2014the only <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/email-client-market-share\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">email clients<\/a> that provide full support for HTML5 video. By using a faux video technique, you can imitate real videos in your email with support across many more email clients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The faux video technique is supported by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gmail<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gmail App<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple Mail<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">iOS Mails for iPhone and iPad<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Samsung Mail<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outlook for Mac<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you\u2019re looking to add some video-like movement to your campaigns, utilizing the faux video technique means your video content can be seen by more subscribers than you could reach when utilizing HTML5 video.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to create a faux video using layered images<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To use this faux video technique in your next email campaign, you will need two images that are the same size: a static cover and an animated GIF, layered on top of each other.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Using a static cover image for faux video<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this example, our static cover image is named <\/span><strong>cover-play.jpg<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the image that will display by default, but will disappear and reveal the background GIF underneath when your subscriber interacts with your email. Our example has a play button icon in the static cover image to imitate a video, but you don\u2019t necessarily need to include one\u2014you can incorporate any kind of graphic or text, if you\u2019d like, but don\u2019t forget your <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/litmus.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-styled-alt-text-in-email\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ALT text<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-22860 media-22860\" class=\"alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image2.jpg\" alt=\"How to create a faux video\" width=\"600\" height=\"300\" \/><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Using an animated GIF background image<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, you\u2019ll need the animated GIF <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/the-ultimate-guide-to-background-images-in-email\/\">background image<\/a>\u2014ours is named <\/span><strong>fauxvideo.gif<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the image that will be revealed when a subscriber hovers over the static cover image. This will be placed into the code as a normal background image.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"post-22859 media-22859\" class=\"alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/image1.gif\" alt=\"The animated GIF background image.\" \/><\/figure>\n<h3>\u00a0<\/h3>\n<h2>How to set up the CSS\/HTML for faux video<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s look at how to use HTML and CSS to set up faux video for your next email campaign:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Using embedded CSS for faux video<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This code goes in between the <\/span><strong>&lt;head&gt;&lt;\/head&gt;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tags at the top of your email.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><code style=\"color: #fff; background: #333;\">\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.showvideo:hover{<\/span>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  opacity: 0 !important;<\/span>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">  transition: 0.3s !important;<\/span>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">}<\/span>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.showvideo { transition: 0.3s !important; }<\/span>\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><strong>:hover<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> style in this code changes the cover image to<\/span> <strong>opacity: 0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014effectively hiding the image\u2014when a subscriber hovers over the section, revealing the animated GIF in the background. The 0.3 second transition is a cosmetic addition, adding a gradual fade to the hover in email clients where it\u2019s supported. It\u2019s added to both the hover and non-hover classes to ensure a smooth transition when a subscriber hovers over the image and mouses off. (Note: you don\u2019t need to set a VML fallback for Outlook, because Outlook does not support hover.)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Using HTML for faux video<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll need to include two sections of code in your HTML, a <\/span><strong>&lt;td&gt;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cell and an <\/span><strong>&lt;img&gt;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the code for the containing <\/span><strong>&lt;td&gt;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cell which loads the animated GIF as a background image, even when the cover image is on top and the interaction is not active.<\/span><\/p>\n<pre><code style=\"color: #fff; background: #333;\">\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&lt;td class=\"w100p\" background=\"<\/span><b>http:\/\/campaigns.litmus.com\/_email\/2019\/03_mar\/20190315_March-NL\/images\/fauxvideo.gif<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\" \nbgcolor=\"#43a1e2\" \nstyle=\"width: 600px; max-width: 600px; \nbackground-size: cover; background-position:center \n!important; border-radius: 10px; \nbox-shadow: 0 15px 35px rgba(50,50,93,.1), 0 5px 15px rgba(0,0,0,.07);\" \nvalign=\"top\"&gt;<\/span>\n\u00a0<\/code><\/pre>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the code for the <\/span><strong>cover-play.jpg<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> image that\u2019s being hidden on <\/span><strong>:hover<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. You can see the complete sample faux video code in action in this <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/codepen.io\/alicemeichi\/pen\/zbNajR\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CodePen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Common faux video questions<\/h2>\n<h3>Is faux video mobile responsive?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Absolutely! While the animated GIF will trigger on hover in desktop, it takes a tap or long-press to reveal the GIF on mobile. However, if a clickthrough is applied in your email, the link will launch the browser on tap and the subscriber will never see the video. Without a clickthrough, the GIF will play as expected. A long-press will reveal the GIF with or without a clickthrough.<\/span><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/fauxvideoimage6.gif\" alt=\"Is faux video mobile responsive?\" width=\"634\" height=\"418\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Can you use retina images with this technique?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes! For the purposes of this example, we did not use retina images, but you can certainly use retina images with faux video if it makes sense for your overall email loading time. Be careful of using images or GIFs that are too large and will negatively impact your email\u2019s loading time. Be sure to check out <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/litmus.com\/blog\/understanding-retina-images-in-html-email\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our post on retina images<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Why use opacity instead of other hiding methods?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using <\/span><strong>display:none<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on a hovered element removes it from the document flow, and you end up getting an effect where the images keep disappearing and reappearing on hover, which does not reveal the animated GIF nor provide a smooth transition:<\/span><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/fauxvideoimage5.gif\" alt=\"use opacity instead of other hiding methods\" width=\"482\" height=\"312\" \/><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using <\/span><strong>visibility:hidden<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would produce a similar flashing effect:<\/span><br \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/fauxvideoimage3.gif\" alt=\"Using visibility:hidden\" width=\"482\" height=\"312\" \/><br \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using the opacity method to hide the cover image provides the smoothest experience, but it also has its drawbacks.
