Email standards are becoming a real thing courtesy of a new community of industry professionals, the <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/emailmarkup.org\/#membership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Email Markup Consortium (EMC)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. And we are here for it! \ud83d\udc4f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether you\u2019re an email designer, email developer, or email marketer, the lack of email standards can quickly derail your efforts. This not only creates more work for your team, but sets murky goals and expectations. However, the EMC is bringing the email community together to help create consistency and collaboration\u2014which is a huge win for all.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To help you better understand the EMC, and what it means for you, we have broken down the details.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">What is the Email Markup Consortium (EMC)?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 15px;border-left: 10px solid #0d5477\"><strong>The EMC is \u201cworking to improve the user experience, accessibility, performance, consistency, and reliability of email markup.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\nLed by <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hus_hmd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hussein Al Hammad<\/a>, <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/M_J_Robbins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Robbins<\/a>, and <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AliceLiCode\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alice Li<\/a>, the group aims to work with developers, email tools, and email clients to drive the EMC\u2019s vision forward at every step of the email journey.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The EMC\u00a0 is a community-led, collaborative group comprised of email developers, designers, and marketers. They aim to improve the email marketing experience for everyone regardless of the recipient\u2019s <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dev.to\/emailmarkup\/introducing-the-email-markup-consortium-emc-52ak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">device<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, email client, assistive technology, or internet speed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">EMC community members share the common goals of improving email:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">User experience<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accessibility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Performance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Consistency<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reliability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Deliverability<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since there have long been inconsistencies in developing this type of community, the EMC is working closely with members to create agreed-upon approaches to save everyone time, effort, and budget while delivering better email results to subscribers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 15px;border-left: 10px solid #0d5477\">\u201cWhere previous projects like this may not have quite worked, there\u2019s more recent evidence of collaboration between vendors that gives me hope that we could soon have a set of email markup standards.<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong>For example, <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/what-is-bimi-and-why-should-email-marketers-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BIMI<\/a>\u2014that\u2019s been a collaborative project between ISPs and vendors in the email space. Dreaming about the day that email developers won\u2019t have to spend their days fixing bugs and creating coding workarounds for all the email clients they have to support but are instead able to push the boundaries of email with standards in place to help them.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong><br \/>\n\u2014Jaina Mistry, Director of Email Marketing at Litmus<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How to join the EMC<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The EMC requires contributions and collaboration from people who come from all aspects of email marketing to be effective. You can apply as an<\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/emailmarkup.org\/#membership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> individual member<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or request a corporate membership. If you aren\u2019t ready to apply formally, you can join an existing <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/email-markup-consortium\/email-markup-consortium\/discussions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">discussion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> or open an issue like you would on any open source project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The good news? There is no set requirement for involvement. You\u2019ll still have access to the information provided by the community regardless of if you contribute.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why we at Litmus are excited about the EMC<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forming a community with resources to standardize email is good for all! Making email better helps developers, designers, and marketers\u2014as well as subscribers\u2014and will work to ensure audiences get a better experience, and brands get more value out of every message sent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 15px;border-left: 10px solid #0d5477\">\u201cWe are excited that the EMC is taking the initiative to get people in the email community talking. I think having one centralized resource hub is a good way to bring unity.
