(This means they lack the ability to use past experiences for decision-making.) These algorithms are one of the oldest and most basic forms of AI systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples of reactive AI today include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spam filters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chatbots<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommendation engines from Spotify or Netflix<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nonetheless, reactive AI has its inherent limitations. In reality, humans have the ability to anticipate and thus prepare for the unexpected, even based on imperfect information. This shortcoming is one of the driving forces for researchers to push AI to the next level (e.g. to be capable of memory and learning).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited memory<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next level is <\/span><strong>limited memory<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> AI. It encompasses the capabilities of reactive AI with the added ability to temporarily store data from past experiences, allowing it to leverage historical data for decision making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited memory AI is what powers a wide array of contemporary AI applications. This includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/types-of-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generative AI tools<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (e.g. ChatGPT)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-driving cars<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Virtual assistants<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now onto the more theoretical types: <\/span><strong>theory of mind <\/strong>and <strong>self aware<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theory of mind<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Theory of mind<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> AI refers to the capability of algorithms to attribute mental states to the entities they interact with. It has yet to be fully developed, but is paving the way for emotionally intelligent robots that resemble humans in conversation. These AI systems will make decisions based on understanding and remembering emotions, adapting their behavior accordingly during interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the road is challenging due to the complexity of human communication, where behavior quickly adapts to shifting emotions. Despite these obstacles, progress is being made. Notable examples include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Professor Cynthia Breazeal&#8217;s <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.mit.edu\/2001\/kismet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social robot Kismet<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, capable of mimicking and responding to human emotions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Hanson Robotics&#8217; <a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hansonrobotics.com\/sophia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">human-like robot Sophia<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can identify faces and respond with its own facial expressions<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the biggest hurdles for AI is the ability to understanding and comprehend. Even AI capable of creating substantial artwork or essays often lacks genuine understanding of its creations. Attaining the theory of mind would represent a significant step towards overcoming this limitation.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-aware<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-aware is the <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bernardmarr.com\/understanding-the-4-types-of-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most advanced type of AI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As the name suggests, it&#8217;s an AI that has evolved to be on par with human intelligence, so much that it\u2019s self-aware. (Think Spike Jonze\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s the ultimate goal of AI, we are decades\u2014<\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/cognitiveworld\/2019\/06\/19\/7-types-of-artificial-intelligence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if not centuries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014away from achieving this.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fields\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The various fields of AI: Machine learning, deep leaning, and generative AI<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably heard the following buzzwords used in association with AI\u2014like machine learning (ML), deep learning, and generative AI. Machine learning is <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ai.engineering.columbia.edu\/ai-vs-machine-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a subset of the broader AI category<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And while machine learning is a subset of AI, generative AI is <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rackspace.com\/blog\/distinctions-ai-ml-generative-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a subset of and machine learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as illustrated above.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generative AI harnesses the capabilities of machine learning to generate content based on data it has been trained on. For that reason, it falls <\/span><a rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.hubspot.com\/marketing\/types-of-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under the <strong>limited memory<\/strong> AI type<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It powers some of the most popular tools used by marketers today (like <a rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.litmus.com\/blog\/ai-email-workflow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using AI in email workflow<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"tools\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the top generative AI tools used by email marketers?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So\u2014which generative AI tools are most popular among email marketers? That means that the AI tools and platforms being used today are either reactive, limited memory, or both.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, chatbots can be considered both reactive <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> limited memory AI. Rule-based chatbots, with predefined responses, represent<\/span> <strong>reactive AI<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of their structured nature. In contrast, machine learning chatbots fall under limited <\/span><strong>memory AI<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, improving with time but constrained by memory as they draw from past data and interactions to respond to customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"how\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s next? How AI will impact email marketers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As noted earlier, copy creation is the most popular use of generative AI.
